ELOUNDA INSTAGRAM GUIDE: THE MOST INSTAGRAMMABLE SPOTS IN THE AREA

Elounda is a cinematic place on its own. Known for the breathtaking views, the crystal clear waters and the picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos. We have collected all the must-see famous spots that worth a visit, not only to enjoy but for an Instagram photo shooting too. After your visit to Elounda, you will be considered an Instagrammer without even trying. Colours of nature are so vibrant and so unreal that you will swear that they are not filtered. Study hard before your arrival and be prepared to unravel the best-hidden spots of eastern Crete.

Kolokytha Beach

Kolokytha is an idyllic beach in Elounda with turquoise water and white sand. Hmm yes, we know…. Welcome to paradise! And like all these were not already enough, kolokytha has the best sunrise. Kolokytha is not an organized beach, so there aren’t sunbeds or beach bars close by. Prepare your picnic bag and get ready to spend a whole day at the beach. Kolokytha beach is hidden after a hill so if you will have to hike 30 minutes at a wonderful route by the sea or just drive.

Spinalonga

Next stop, Spinalonga Island. If you haven’t visit Spinalonga, you haven’t visit Elounda. Beyond the history of the fortress, Spinalonga has to offer surreal views to Elounda Bay and unique shots in the alleys of the fortress, reminding medieval time. The scene is so tense that creates you the feeling that you lived here in real. Before you visit Spinalonga, do your research about the history of the island.

Vrouchas Village

The highest you reach, the better you get. One great road trip is to start from Elounda, continue all the way up to Vrouchas and then end up at Vlichadia beach. Find the trip here. For the way to Vrouchas there is a point of view (35°18’27.2″N 25°43’42.7″E) where you can admire the whole Mirabello bay and of course take breathtaking photos. There is enough space to park the car and a bench to enjoy a cold beer.

Pro tip: Ask at the reception desk which days Spinalonga is being illuminated and go there in the evening. You will be thrilled by the view.

Instagrammable Lake of Agios Nikolaos

The picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos, 10 minutes-drive from Elounda, has numerous hidden spots where you can capture thrilling pictures. Just wander around and your camera will get fire. Number one photogenic spot with everyone posing here is the Lake of Agios Nikolaos. All the houses around and the small bridge in the middle, make the perfect scenery for the perfect shot.

Insider Tip: Go on the top of the lake, at the small park, the view from there is stunning.

Voulisma Beach

Voulisma beach is 20 minutes from Elounda, but it definitely worth the drive. The view of this beach, we promise, will blow your mind. A combination of emerald transparent water with white sand reminds a tropical scenery. The water here is so clear that your photos will have this floating effect. Go to the very right side of the beach for better shots.

Kritsa Village

The Cretan traditional village of Kritsa is a 20 minutes drive from Elounda and is one of the most beautiful villages in Crete. It has a lot of historical monuments and museums if you want to combine the visit, but of course, it is the perfect setting for successful Instagram shots. Find your spot and start clicking!

Elounda Palm’s Suite Infinity Pool

Last but number one for all of us is the established photo at the infinity private pool of our Infinity Junior Suites.
GREEK ISLAND HOPPING: TOP REASONS TO VISIT CRETE THIS SUMMER

Are you in the hunt for the next summer escape? Are you flirting with the idea of a “modern Odyssey”? Greek island hopping should be on your bucket list and now is the time (new year-new resolutions) dreams to come true! Now that you have already dreamed yourself on a beach, keep on reading, because here you will find the best tips on how to organize your summer holidays in Greece.

It may look chaotic to choose the right place, with all these small islands in the Aegean Sea. But that’s why we are here to help you decide the best destination for your summer Holidays. If you haven’t already got it from the title this place is definitely Crete! We highly recommend, keeping your base in Crete and if you wish you can definitely make daily trips to other Greek islands. Here you will get why…

The best connection between Cyclades, Athens, Aegean Sea, Mykonos, Santorini

Crete has two big airports, one in Heraklion (70 km from Elounda) and one in Chania. During the season there are many flights directly to Crete or through Athens, which makes it a great opportunity for a stop at the capital.

Tip: The sooner you book the flights, the cheaper you will get the tickets.

Crete has developed a huge net of flights, ferries and cruises, so you can very easily find the perfect way to reach your desired destination.

Thira (Santorini) is highly recommended for a daily excursion since it is quite small and one day is enough to explore the entire island. You can either take the ferry from the port of Heraklion or book a daily excursion to Santorini with a guide. For more information you can ask us at Elounda Palm Hotel & Suites reception desk.

Another easy combination is Mykonos- Crete. Mykonos is the notorious island for its nightlife and lifestyle. Celebrities & millionaires from all over the world visit the island of the wind for their Greek summer holidays. Elounda from the other side is famous for its tranquility and the amazing landscapes. Is there anything better than partying for 3 days in Mykonos and then relax under the sun at your private pool in Elounda?

Here you can find online tickets for all the ferries to and from Crete.

A destination on its own

</emframe>

Crete is the largest Greek island and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It has such a big biodiversity that if you travel from the east to the west side, you do not have the sense that you are on the same island. That gives you the opportunity to explore different cities, completely different landscapes, while being on the same island and without traveling a lot.

You can spend half days of your holidays in Crete, at the cosmopolitan town of Chania and the rest half in fabulous Elounda. The list of Hotels in Crete is endless with exceptional quality and atmosphere for all types of accommodation. Cretans are ready to serve you with all kinds of comforts and services.

Hurry up to find the best offer before the season starts!

Relaxation + Adventures = Crete

Crete is the ideal place for any occasion and can cover the most demanding out there. Either you are looking for the perfect honeymoon destination; either you are looking for the safest destination for your family vacation, Crete is the answer.

Are you dreaming laid back summer holidays next to emerald beaches and romantic dinners under the stars? Then Elounda is the right place to escape for tranquilization and relaxation away from any kind of stress.

If you are on the more adventurous side, your holidays in Crete will definitely not disappoint you! Just remember to create fun moments from your family holidays in Crete.

Crossroad of Gastronomy, Culture and History

Crete’s first civilization (Minoan civilization) was the first civilization in Europe.
LAST MINUTE HOLIDAYS: SPRING IN CRETE

When thinking of a Greek island what comes first in mind is the hot Greek summer, pictures of Greece’s sandy beaches, white houses with blue doors, endless sunbathing and sunset cocktails…

But what really happens if you visit Greece on a season other than summer? How is the weather in Greece in March, April and May? Is it true that Crete island is one of the best places to visit in Greece for a spring holiday? We have all the answers!

It’s true: Crete is one of the best destinations in Greece during spring time. The island is situated on the southernmost part of Greece and temperatures rise earlier compared to the rest of Europe. What’s more, spring is the most colourful time of the year, when Crete is in full bloom and beauty at its best. There are hundreds of things to do in Crete this time of the year, especially if you are lucky enough to visit during the Greek Orthodox Easter. As the days get warmer, sunnier and longer, if you visit Crete in spring you will be rewarded with the perfect weather for sightseeing, away from the crowds; there are no queues in Knossos palace and other important Greek attractions and the weather still permits you to enjoy the best beaches in Crete. Also, the flights to Crete from other European destinations are just starting (unless you prefer to have a stopover at Greece’s capital and fly from Athens to Crete). Flight rates are low and you can stay at a fraction of the price to some of the best hotels in Crete – including our very own Elounda Palm Hotel ( don’t forget to check out our current offers for the coming season! )

What to enjoy in March

Photo property of Elounda Palm Hotel

Maybe the temperature of the water is not ideal for swimming, but the weather in Crete in March is perfect for all adventurous explorers out there. The cooler days offer propitious environment for hiking on the mountains, exploring gorges and ruins, mountain biking and sightseeing.

At this time of year, you can live it like a local! Tourist season hasn’t started yet (most hotels in Elounda are closed), so you will have the chance to stay in Agios Nikolaos, interact easier with locals and discover the real Cretan lifestyle. All the overcrowded must-see spots and archaeological sites will be quiet at this time of year and ready to welcome you.

Crete in April

This is officially the start of the season when the hotels in Elounda open the doors to visitors, and the time of year with the best offers for cheap holidays. There’s a big range of availability in all types of accommodation in Elounda and every kind of excursion to cover your wildest expectations. Also, you will find good deals for flights and holiday packages; now is the time to book your last minute hotel room with private pool and -if lucky- find available one of our brand new private pool suites!

What makes April so important (especially this year) is the Greek Orthodox Easter, a holiday far more important than Christmas for Greeks; a big feast celebrated with big honours. Of course, the best part of Greek Easter in Crete is food! Locals are getting ready and prepare the household with easter delicacies for weeks before the grand day.
HOLIDAYS IN CRETE: 5 REASONS WE LOVE ELOUNDA

Only a few days till Valentine’s day and we thought to open our heart to you and share our feelings for our big love, Elounda of Crete.

If you have ever been in love, you must be familiar with the feeling of loving every part of someone. This is exactly how we feel about our Elounda. This little fish village in east Crete is a secret haven for holidays in Greece for couples, ideal for Greek island hopping, great for family holidays in Greece and with absolute certainty, one of the best honeymoon destinations in Greece (wink wink Valentine!)

Amazing location with breathtaking landscape and the most beautiful sunrise are only some of the reasons to visit Elounda. And with more than a handful of the best hotels in Crete, once you visit Elounda and stay in the Elounda Palm Hotel’s brand new private pool suites (launching this spring summer 2019!) or our spacious sharing pool suites and comfortable rooms and bungalows, your Elounda holidays will remain unforgettable -without blowing your budget- and will bring you back for holidays in Crete every year. So, mind you dear guests, this paradise on the island of Crete will steal your heart (like ours!) and it doesn’t have to become the rival of your Valentine but your loving nest.

We have millions reasons to love this place, but here are the 5 that stands out the most:

1. The Island of Spinalonga

Picture by Brian Kloek via Agios Nikolaos Crete

Not so long ago (from 1903 till 1957) the island of Spinalonga hosted a leper colony, inhabited by people from all over Greece who were diagnosed with Hansen’s Disease, all isolated away from their families in this ex-Venetian castle. The extraordinary story of Spinalonga island and the stories of love and tears that surround this era still strike visitors to date.

After Victoria Hislop’s magnificent novel “The Island” became a bestseller and a successful TV series, Spinalonga topped the bucket list of travelers worldwide. The area has a cinematic scenery and remains a living legend in the modern society of Elounda and Plaka. Wandering around the narrow alleys of Spinalonga you become the star, overwhelmed by the vibes from all the stories of pain and love of the past.

Visiting the Island is very easy. You can hop on a boat either from Elounda, Plaka or from Agios Nikolaos or combine a guided tour to the island with a daily excursion and a swim in the crystal clear water of Mirabello gulf.

2. Luxury and Simplicity in Balance

Infinity Suite sharing pool- Elounda Palm Hotel

There’s abundance of hotels in Crete with private pool, luxury resorts and boutique hotels, but the hotels in Elounda are top notch. At the same time, the luxurious feel of your hotel room and private pool is balanced by the simplicity of the area and the casual vibe of authentic villages like Plaka, Mavrikiano and Fourni or the picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos.

There are only a few destinations in Greece where you can find the best hotels and authentic surroundings; you either have to compromise with basic accommodation or touristic surroundings. Holidays in Elounda need no compromises!

In the Elounda Palm Hotel we pride for keeping elegance and simplicity at perfect balance, offering comfortable rooms, spacious sharing pool rooms and private pool suites, laid back feel, friendly customer service and authentic Cretan cuisine to pamper you but also make you feel like Crete is home.

Who needs more?!

3. Strategic Location

Photo property of Elounda Palm hotel

Elounda is located at a perfect spot…simple as that! It is less than an hour from the airport of Heraklion (the biggest airport in Crete) and one hour from the capital of Crete, Heraklion. That means easy access to the heart of the island, the north, the south, further east, but also easy access to the Cycladic islands of Mykonos, Santorini and beyond through the port of Heraklion for the best Greek island hopping! This is probably why smart travelers combine a relaxing stay in a hotel in Elounda after an adventure in a Cycladic island (like Mykonos) or the wild Chania on the west part of Crete.

Daily excursions to Knossos Palace, Festos Palace, the Museum of Heraklion, Lassithi plateau, Ierapetra, Matala, Sitia, Vai beach and the magnificent Chrissi island on a boat trip are only a few of the things to do from Elounda, hassle free. And after a long day on the road, relaxing by your infinity suite sharing pool with views of the Mirabello bay makes you feel you’re at the right place, at the right time!

4. Fish and Seafood Paradise

Photo property of Elounda Palm hotel

As you may have read from our last blog post on Cretan cuisine, the menu on a Cretan table is mainly dominated by meat dishes (goat and lamb at their best!). However, we have great news for all the fish lovers and pescetarians out there; you just found your ideal holiday destination in Crete! Elounda and Plaka are fish villages with many restaurants and tavernas serving different kinds of fresh fish and seafood, cooked in many delicious ways!

Committed to our love for authentic dishes, at the Elounda Palm Hotel you will find fresh fish for lunch at the pool restaurant and on the a la carte dinner menu at Dacos Restaurant prepared by our chef, Vassilis and his team, with love! Pair your seafood meal with ouzo or Assyrtiko wine from our meticulously drafted wine list.

For an unforgettable experience you can even go fishing with a sailing boat and eat the catch of the day with your “colleagues” during your boat trip on the gulf of Mirabello. For more information ask us at the reception.

5. Great Holidays for Couples and Families

Hands down, Elounda is the best honeymoon destination in Crete and one of the top in Greece and worldwide for a special occasion and a romantic getaway! Holidays in Greece for couples may be an easy task, but there aren’t many destinations which tick all the right boxes. Exquisite sharing and private pool rooms: check! Location: check! Romantic stories and scenery: check! Authenticity: check! Check, check, check!

So, while the party boys and girls are headed to another location, couples of all ages, friends, solo travelers and families visit Elounda for their dose of relaxation and adventure.

5 EASY TIPS TO FEEL LIKE A LOCAL ON YOUR HOLIDAYS IN CRETE

If you’ve already booked your holidays in Greece and will be visiting Crete on your Greek island hopping, then we sure hope to see you in our cosy Hotel Elounda Palm! Most importantly, we want to help you make the most of your stay in the island of Crete.

Crete is known from ancient times for its hospitality. According to Greek mythology Zeus who was born and raised on the island of Crete, was the protector of foreigners who visited Crete and made them feel welcome. Therefore it is believe that Cretans inherited the hospitality from the father of Gods, Xenios Zeus.

Hospitality in Greek is “Filoxenia” which comes from the words “Filos(=friend)” and “Xenos(=stranger)“. It means that you approach strangers treating them like they are your friends so as to make them feel like home. Cretans nowadays maintain their reputation and try to be the best hosts.

Cretan hospitality cannot be described, you have to experience it. Although here are some of the “musts” you will “taste” if you visit Crete.

#1 Drink “Raki” and say “Ya mas” with everyone, everywhere

From your arrival at Elounda Palm Hotel to the last taverna you will go, everyone will welcome you with a shot of Raki and say “Ya mas” out loud. Raki is the traditional liqueur of Crete, made from grapes and nearly every family produces its own raki, so there’s plenty of it everywhere! You can find it in every store with traditional products or you can ask a local to give you a bottle to take it back home with you.

“Ya mas” is “Cheers” in Greek, which means to drink to our health! If you want to show off (just a little bit) you could say “Eviva do” which is used in the Cretan dialect.

Caution: the one who treats you the raki, also has to drink!

Don’t be afraid, drink as much as you want, as long as you stick to raki and won’t mix it with other spirits. Good quality raki will not give you a hangover the next day! A morning dive in the private pool of your Villa in Elounda Palm will be just enough to wash all worries away!

#2 Talk with old people in the villages even if they don’t speak any English

It’s very common for people to greet you in the streets even if they don’t know you. Especially in the villages, older people will talk to you and maybe invite you into their houses.

The other day we were on a trip in south Crete, close to Elounda and we sat by the beach to have some coffee. An old man came close to us and said “Kalimera (=good morning)”. We were not sure what he wanted but he immediately invited us in his house for a coffee and brought us a full bag of apples and oranges which he had just cut from his garden. We were surprised by his kindness and his generosity.

It is so beautiful when people are pure and real, with an open heart.

#3 Dessert after lunch or dinner (or both!)

Insider’s tip: If you go to a local taverna or a restaurant in Crete, you don’t have to order dessert because they will bring it anyway! They will offer you homemade delicacies like fruit preserves, honeyballs aka “Loukoumades” or Greek orange pie with ice cream. And of course on top of that a huge fruit platter with local seasonal fruits.

And don’t forget the raki! They serve it also at the end, because it helps with digestion.

#4 Dance “Syrto” with the locals

Picture ourtesy of Nikos Rouvalis

In the past, locals celebrated big religious feasts where young boys had the chance to meet the girls from the area and choose their beloved one (so no need for dating apps)! Once they found their match, they invited her to a traditional dance.

Nowadays there are many feasts in Crete, all year around, but mainly in the summertime. Locals and visitors alike enjoy the Cretan folk music by the melody of Lyra, lute and mandolin accompanied with a lot of dancing.

If locals see you watching from a corner, they will drag you into the circle of the dance, or you could always be brave and just try to follow the steps of the others on your own! This is not a Greek dancing competition!

#5 Make lifetime friendships

People you meet in Crete will not forget you, and you will definitely not forget them! This is why many people come back again and again – the boutique Elounda Palm hotel is a hub for families and couples who visit Crete for years (raise your hand if you’re one of them)! It is not only the beauty of the island that makes it so special. It is the people and the unforgettable moments with them, that will last for a lifetime and make you feel that you belong here.

These are only some of the highlights of Cretan hospitality to be experienced on your next holidays in Elounda! Just unwind, be yourself and you will feel like home. We hope our tips will help you discover the Cretan tradition and feel like a local during your stay in Crete.

The Top Reasons to Visit Crete

The island of Crete is the largest in Greece, and it has a truly magical atmosphere all its own. It is big enough for you to easily spend a full holiday there exploring its hidden corners, tasting the best of Greek cuisine, and basking in that magical Mediterranean light. No matter what you’re looking for, we’re sure you’ll be able to find it in Crete. Check out our top reasons for visiting this mythical island!

#1 An Ancient Capital and Secret Codes

What was that mythical story about Theseus and the Minotaur again? The king of Crete, Minos, was plagued by the Minotaur, a monster locked in a labyrinth under the castle, who demanded a sacrifice of seven young men and women each year. King Minos in turn demanded that Athens send these young men and women to satisfy the Minotaur, which they did until Theseus, the son of the king of Athens decided to put a stop to things and sailed to Crete to defeat the Minotaur. With the help of Ariadne, the Cretan princess, he successfully entered the labyrinth and killed the Minotaur, and used a thread (Ariadne’s idea!) to find his way back out of the maze again.

This story takes place in Knossos, which is also Europe’s oldest city and just one of the ancient treasures to be explored in Crete. Knossos was the capital of the Minoan civilisation from around 2000 BC, and the palace (home of the famous labyrinth) is a short trip from Crete’s biggest city of Heraklion. The site was controversially restored by a British archaeologist in the early 1900s, so you can actually go inside parts of the palace that have been reconstructed, complete with replica wall-paintings and frescoes.

An equally impressive ancient site, though with much less tourist traffic, Phaistos was the second largest city of the Minoans. The location is not quite as convenient for Heraklion, but it is just a few kilometers from the southern coast of the island and the sea. The site was inhabited beginning in 4000 BC, and is still a great destination for ancient exploration. If you want to dig deeper (literally) into Minoan civilization you should join one of our hand-picked excavation tours!

Tip: If it’s too hot for serious archaeological exploration, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is truly unmissable. The museum recently reopened after a seven year renovation, and the wait was totally worth it, as it is now one of Greece’s top historical attractions. Its new exhibition spaces gather together treasures from the island’s rich history, including the Phaistos Disc, covered with mysterious symbolic inscriptions that have eluded archaeologists. Check it out for yourself and see what you can make of the code!

#2 Mysterious Castles and Winding Alleys

Though it’s easy to get lost in Crete’s ancient history, the whole island is dotted with incredible landmarks from the (relatively) more recent past too. Crete was part of the Republic of Venice for more than 400 years, and they certainly left their trace. The main cities of Crete, Chania and Heraklion were fortified with huge walls encircling and protecting the city. The walls of both cities are still standing (and still very sturdy!), and exploring the giant stones and ancient winding streets within them is a great way to time travel!

If huge walls don’t seem impressive enough, Crete is home to serious castles. The city of Rethymno is dominated by a 16th century Venetian Castle (called the Fortezza!), which you can visit and easily imagine keeping watch for invaders from one of the many towers. If you’re visiting the southern coast, check outFrangokastello, another Venetian castle seemingly forgotten on the beach.

The Venetians were driven out by the Ottoman Turks, who held on to Crete for another 200 plus years, and also left their own landmarks on the island. The major cities all have a unique mix of Orthodox Churches, mosques, Catholic places of worship (from the Venetians) and even a surviving synagogue or two. The diversity of Crete’s history makes it a pretty special place, and getting lost in the winding alleys of Chania or Rethymno’s old city is one of the most unique things to do to immerse yourself in the island’s past.

Tip: Have you heard of the international bestseller by Victoria Hislop The Island? The book was inspired by the island/fort of Spinalonga, just off the coast of Elounda a short ride from the picturesque Agios Nikolaos in the Eastern part of Crete. The little island was fortified by the Venetians for defence purposes, but what has turned the island into a ‘legend’ are the stories from the 20th century when it became a leper colony.

#3 Wild Nature and Gorgeous Gorges

The diversity of Crete’s history is surpassed only by the diversity of its natural landscape. The more developed northern coast (home to the three largest cities) is dwarfed by the incredible mountains ofcentral Crete. The ‘White Mountains‘ dominate Western Crete, while Mount Psyloritis (also known as Mount Ida), the highest mountain on the island at almost 2500m, is located south of Rethymno. For much of the year the mountains are capped with snow, and create a rugged and wild landscape that is truly breathtaking.

Among the mountains are a variety of deep gorges, including Samaria Gorge (a reason on its own to visit Crete!) and Imbros Gorge which are great for walking and exploring the dramatic landscapes. In the province of Chania, you can find Crete’s only freshwater lake, Lake Kournas, which is surrounded by a lush green area full of wildlife.

In another vein entirely, the eastern coast of Crete hides Europe’s only palm forest in Vai and one of the most unique places in Greece. Visit the nearby beach, munch on truly local bananas, and if you close your eyes you’ll forget that you’re not in the tropics!

Tip: Hiking through Europe’s longest gorge (aka Samaria Gorge) is one of the best things to do in Crete, hands down. The gorge was created by a river running from high in the White Mountains down to the sea, and you can hike down along the river for an unforgettable experience. The walk itself is a long one, at nearly 16km, but if you are up for some active exploration it is well worth it (plus it is all downhill!). The path ends at the tiny village of Agia Roumeli, where you get your reward for the hike – a dip in the sea at the black sand beach. The only way out of the town is by ferry boat to a nearby port with bus service, so you are forced to relax and recover for a little while, and get a bit of extra sightseeing in at the end.

#4 Tropical Waters, Without the Sharks!

Don’t be fooled into thinking that Crete’s landscape is only dramatic mountains and craggy cliffs. The entire island is circled by beaches one more stunning than the next, and exploring the variety of Cretan beachesis one of the best things to do in the summer.

The list of best beaches in Crete is a long one, but some of the highlights include the crystal-clear,Caribbean-like waters of Elafonisi, which look too perfect to be real (but we promise it actually is that gorgeous in real life); the exotic lagoon of Balos (in the cover picture); the black sand beaches at Agia Roumeli; the Paleohora beach on the southern coast which is a dreamy stretch of endless sand and the beach at Vai, which is right next to the palm forest.

But that’s not all! Crete is surrounded by exotic islets only a short ferry ride from the main island. The island of Chrysi (also Gaidouronisi, aka ‘Donkey Island’!) will enchant you with its white sand, turquoise waters and cedar trees (the island hosts the largest natural Lebanon cedar forest in Europe!). Also magical, the island of Koufonisi in the Libyan sea is surrounded by pure white sand, and crystalline waters but also magnificent white rock caves. (Stay tuned to discover extraordinary professionals who can take you on day tours to these magical islands. )

Tip: Crete’s beaches are legendary not only for their beauty but for their energy and lively history! Special reference here to the beach of Matala, known for the rocks surrounding it, which are full of tiny caves that housed hippies in the 1960s, and is now one of many Blue Flag beaches in Crete.

#5 Divine Greek Cuisine

Cretan cuisine has a language all its own, with incredible flavors’ and local ingredients so unique that there are specialty Cretan stores found throughout the rest of Greece. Let’s not forget that Crete is also a top producer of quality olive oil -which is also something you need to pack in your bags before you leave the island! Along with olive oil, Crete has a wine tradition more than 4000 years old that is definitely worth exploring! The best part about Cretan food is that so much of it is local and fresh, and it draws on a unique tradition influenced by the varied cultures that have passed through the island throughout its history.

Among the top things to eat in Crete are the local salad called ‘Dakos,’ made with fresh tomatoes, Cretanmizithra cheese and olive oil all on top of a crisp, hard rusk, vaguely similar to a bruschetta (but better!). The cheeses in Crete stand out all on their own, ranging from soft and mild mizithra to aged graviera, as well as a cheesy spread called xinogalo. Visit the markets in Chania or Heraklion to get a sense of the numerous cheesy choices, and try a little bit of everything to find your favorite! For foodies, there are organized tours that can guide you to foodie’ meccas; sign up to get notified first for extraordinary gastronomic experiences!

The wild herbs and greens that are abundant on Cretan hillsides are also a staple of local cuisine – especially stamnagathi (remember our intro to horta, greens dressed with olive oil and lemon?) andaskordoulakous (bulbs of wild greens, eaten fresh as salad). If you are looking for an ‘intro’ to Greek greens (aka ‘horta”) and if you need help to navigate through a Greek taverna menu, you should definitely read this.

Tip: For more substantial munchies, the ever-resourceful Cretans are known for enjoying their snails called ‘hochliee‘ in a wide variety of interpretations, from fried (with vinegar, salt and rosemary) to baked in a clay pot. Smoked ham called apaki is also a delicious classic, with a delicate herb flavour setting it apart from other meat. Last but not lest, Sfakianes pites (also mizithropites) are Crete’s interpretation of the classic Greek tiropita (cheese pie). This variation is round and flat, stuffed with a mild, soft cheese and then lightly fried. The real game changer is the drizzle of local honey on top, which creates a flavour combination unlike any other.

#6 The Colourful Cretans Themselves

Cretan food on its own is mouth-watering, but it usually never comes without a hefty dose of Cretan hospitality. Locals are known for their indomitable spirit (and may remind you that in World War Two it took the invading Germans 11 days to occupy the island), but also their pride in their local culture. Many meals are introduced with the Cretan spirit-of-choice, tsikoudia (also known as raki), which friendly locals may invite you to share with them, regardless of the time of day. While you’re sipping your raki enjoy some people watching – Cretans are especially known for their incredible moustaches!

Cretan culture is not just based on fierce independence and pride, but also on a unique literary and artistic culture as well, based in the island’s unique history. Writer and cultural giant Nikos Kazantzakis, creator of the legendary Zorba the Greek and nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature nine times, and the iconic artist El Greco both hailed from Crete, along with a number of other major cultural figures.

The island’s music is equally unique, and a rich tradition of folk music and dances permeates everyday life. In the summer, live music can be heard almost every night, and if you’re lucky try to witness someCretan traditional dancing. The dances are notable for their high energy and pathos, and some serious acrobatics as well, and the spirit is totally infectious (check out this video for a sneak peek!).

Tip: A visit to Crete isn’t complete without at least a little bit of music and dancing! To experience the best of both track down the closest ‘panigiri‘ (or else ‘local traditional fiesta‘)! ‘Panigiria’ (plural!) are hosted in the centre of villages, in the back yards of churches, even in school yards and training tracks; they are often ‘themed’ (e.g. dedicated to ‘raki’ or ‘mizithropita’ or even ‘bread’) in which case expect to learn -and taste- more of the featured product!

#7 True Escapism and Adventure

You’ve probably understood by now that calling Crete an ‘island’ doesn’t quite do it justice. It has all the pros of an island: stunning beaches, laid back life style, amazing amenities – but it is so big that you can easily go off the beaten path and do your own exploring. Traversing the island end to end will take you more than a week if you want to catch just the highlights, and for serious travelers you could easily spend twice that much time there. Crete literally has it all – any type of landscape, hotel, activity, pace, whatever you can imagine, you can find it here.

A huge bonus with Crete is that although the island itself is huge and it’s easy to find your own corner for exploring, it is still easily accessible. It has three airports (Heraklion, Chania and a smaller one in Sitia) serving both the Greek mainland and other islands, as well as direct daily connections with Europe. Plus there are always the overnight ferries from Athens if you have a little bit more time on your hands or travelling on a budget.

Crete is full of great things to do on a trip to Greece, including all the classics like beach time, sightseeing, cultural adventures and (obviously) eating, but it also offers abundant opportunities for outdoor adventures and unique tours and activities. If you like the idea of a day spent outside doing something like walking Samaria Gorge, you can also try off-roading in a 4×4, scuba diving to ancient shipwrecks, visiting a working olive grove and getting up close and personal with the olive oil making process, or snorkeling along the coast.

9 Hidden tavernas you need to try near Elounda and Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos (aka ‘Agios’ or ‘Agnik’) and Elounda in Crete are famous for a few things which makes them a unique travel experience; one of them is that the area has a few of the best hotels in Crete, if not in Greece; another is the mysterious Spinalonga island, -among other interesting local attractions- which makes it at the top of most visited Greek historical sites, after the Acropolis. Still, one thing most people don’t know is the mind-blowing food you can find in this part of Crete. While most visitors enjoy their hotel’s menu, long buffets, room service and Michelin starred restaurants (which are top notch-truth be told), the area has a few gastronomic gems hidden in secluded villages that you would never find out, unless a local told you. If only Michelin inspectors knew….!
If you’ve had too much of grilled chicken and choriatiki and are curious to try authenticpaidakia, hochlious, mizithropita, meat in wooden ovens and raki, we are about to share a few of the best kept secrets in Crete (lucky you!). So, without further ado, here are a few of our favourite tavernas in villages close to Agios and Elounda which should make it to the top of your list of unique things to do in Crete (in random order, as we couldn’t decide which one’s the best!).

#1 ‘O Platanos’ – Fourni village

Fourni is one of the cutest and well preserved villages we’ve visited in Crete. It’s located about 20 minutes drive, on the mountains, from Plaka near Elounda. After lots of turns (and no lights to make this easier) you will reach magnificent Fourni situated amidst an olive grove, in a plateau. If you can make it during sunset the ride and arrival will be more rewarding. Head to ‘O Platanos‘ taverna which is in the central ‘piazza’ of the village just under a huge sycamore tree (which also makes it one of the most fun things to do with kids in the area).

What to eat: Paidakia (aka lamb chops), eggs with staka and ask for the casseroles of the day (usually rabbit and hen). The kataifi dessert is a great ending to this delicious feast.
Where to call: +30 2841090776

#2 ‘Miliaras’ – Latsida village

About 15 minutes from Agios Nikolaos and on the way to the airport (after the exit for Neapoli) you’ll find a tiny, almost invisible AND in Greek(!), sign that directs you to Latsida on your right hand side. Once you make a right and follow the road, you’ll soon reach Latsida village and your hot-spot ‘Miliaras‘ is the first taverna on your left; you’ll probably spot it because it’s usually packed with locals (and we’re not surprised, as it’s one of the best places to eat in this area!)

What to try: Souvlaki pork skewers (the best in Greece!), cheese-balls (gigantic fried cheese balls to-die-for), hochlious boubouristous (aka snails with vinegar and rosemary on the pan) , anthous (which are vine lives OR zuccini flowers stuffed with rice) paired with xygalo (soft cheese from sheep and goat’s milk) or old-school tzatziki. For those who can’t have pork, the taverna also serves heavenly paidakia lamb chops.
Where to call: +30 2841 034050

#3 ‘Stavrakakis’ – Exo Lakonia village

Enter the destination ‘Exo Lakonia’ in your Google Maps and you will reach a taverna beneath a magnificent fouchsia bougainvillea. The taverna does not have an official name, but is known by the surname of the owner (that is Mr Stavrakakis!). There you will find the usual traditional Cretan meze menu, all prepared with fresh and local ingredients. Interesting fact: Just across the street, where you least expect it, you will find one of the area’s most unusual local attractions; the Museum of Classical Vehicles!

What to try: Hortopitakia (liitle pies with herbs and wild greens), mizithropitakia (pies with soft white cheese), anthous, but also a variety of grilled meat (such as sausages and paidakia) and often casseroles.
Where to call: +30 2841022478

#4 ‘To Rakadiko Tou Kamari’ (aka ‘The Hope’) – Mavrikiano village

Only a short drive from Elounda and Plaka you will reach the village of Mavrikiano and the taverna ‘To Rakadiko Tou Kamari‘ aka ‘The Hope’! The taverna serves local delicacies with beautiful views to the bay of Mirabello; so what else can you ask for your holiday in Crete, really?!

What to eat: Go for the grilled meat!
Where to call: +30 697 229 5150

#5 & #6 ‘Christinis’ and ‘Ta Kato Kafeneia’ – Limnes village

We still remember a mouthwatering slow cooked meat with potatoes that we tried in Limnes, at ‘Christinis’ taverna a few years ago and that’s how this place made it to our list of what to do in Crete this summer. Another time, we drunk lots of raki over a ‘light’ souvlaki, omelette and traditional Cretan tapas dinner at ‘Ta Kato Kafeneia’, whose old spot used to be in the heart of this charming little mountain village, but who have now moved on the main road, almost next to ‘Christinis’. Either way you go, be prepared to nibble great meat with your raki.

What to eat: Slow cooked, wood oven meat (when available) or yummy biftekia burgers at ‘Christinis’,souvlaki and omelette at ‘Ta Kato Kafeneia’.
Where to call: ‘Christinis’: +30 2841 032269 | ‘Ta Kato Kafeneia’: +302841033323

#7 ‘O Platanos tis Kyra Lenis’ – Vrachasi, Neapoli village

Approaching the 46th kilometre of the national road from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos, the mountain village of Vrachasi hides ‘Platanos’ taverna where Kyra Leni (Mrs Eleni) serves her old time classics for the ones in the know and those who seek an authentic travel experience. Make sure to carry a jacket with you as it gets chilly up there…

What to eat: Sofregada which is a casserole of wild mixed greens and snails (aka hochlious) and other casseroles of the day.
Where to call: +30 28410 31488

#8 ‘Vilaeti’ – Agios Konstantinos village

‘Vilaeti’ is a small traditional guesthouse in the village of Agios Konstantinos in Lasithi plateau, which is a long drive from Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. However, Vilaeti is known well to locals because of its delicious meat delicacies that make the drive to Agios Konstantinos worth it for a mouthwatering meal!

What to eat: Meat roasted in a traditional wood oven and Greek style ‘asado‘ lamb called Antikristo, not to be missed!
Where to call: +30 6977248456

#9 ‘Bogazi’ – Mochlos village

If you have had enough of meat and mountains and want a seafront, fish-y alternative, then you need to visit the village of Mochlos, which -according to locals- has the best fish you can find in the area of Lasithi and is one of the best things to do in the area in the summer. As with a few other villages we’ve brought up (above), this fish village is a long ride from Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. However, if you are into adventurous tours and seek for a unique experience you can join one of our day trips in the gulf of Mirabello and reach the spot by sea with a catamaran! In this way you will admire some local attractions from the sea, you will swim in turquoise crystal waters and will seal this day with a delicious fish lunch or sunset dinner. Out of all seafront tavernas, we would pick the Bogazi.

What to eat: Fresh fish. Full stop.
Where to call: +30 284 3094200

General tips: You don’t necessarily need a reservation for these places (unless it’s high season); most of them won’t even accept one. However, it may be useful to call in advance to make sure they are open and that there’s a casserole of the day (unless you don’t mind having an omelette or souvlaki for dinner, which is still worth the ride). On a different note, if you wish to explore the area’s culinary scene in more depth we recommend you join a food tour or a cooking class; and if you stay in touch, we will soon introduce you to the most extraordinary hosts in town!
